Season 39 - Episode 2 - Miley Cyrus

Opening sketch with Miley Cyrus being warned by a younger Miley about not doing the Video Music Awards which was the downfall of America. Good exaggeration premiss with a few characters coming in and out but not really a progression of anything. Ending was easy, "Live from New york, it's Saturday night Live"

Opening monolog
Short talk by Miley about the Video Music Awards saying she won't twerk and they won't do the wrecking ball sketch with a funny visual of Bobby Moynehan.

50 Shades of Grey screen test commercial
Not a sketch or even a commercial, but a series of good immitations of celebrities. Laugh track attack.

Girlfriends talk show
Good situation of two BFFs but one has befriended another who is more urban and in the hip-hop club. Characters were good with the old friend trying not to be replaced.

Boehner and Backman government shutdown video
Not big on lyrics but big on funny visuals that moved fast. I liked this and so does the world.

Piers Morgan with Arianna Huffington
A series of made for TV movie previews for Hilary Clinton projects from various networks. Each network has a different take such as Fox portraying her as very evil. Some funny moments but not really a sketch.

Miley sings. Started out singing like Karen O from Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Two guitar players with a whole lot of effects on the floor for one song and no solos.

Weekend update
This was good. Seth is smiling less but during Winners and Losers he smiled a lot. Kate as the the mother who played Grand Theft Auto was funny. Kate has crazy eyes. Jay Pharoh as Shannon Sharp was strictly a very exaggerated immitation. He started to laugh but recovered, see that Horatio Sans? Venessa as Jacob is a funny character. She is a jewish kid who can't say anything that is not scripted. She's really good with the character.

Alien abduction cheerleaders sketch
Finally! This was bad. Cheerleaders disappear one by one. Then the alien comes to explain and of course it's Keenan. He does the cheerleader cheer saying that he's taking the moon. Then a spaceship takes the moon. If I brought this idea to my comedy group I would hope they would lose respect for me. It sounds like Miley wanted to play a cheerleader and Keenan won a bet that he got to dress as an alien. Somehow they killed two birds with one stone and four minutes of my life. This sucked.

Mornin' Miami
Three hosts tape promos for their show. Between takes they are bored and angry. Once the countdown happens they perk up and do good characters and good lines. They do that 4 times. No, I didn't forget the ending. There was none. That was it. Not a sketch but a series of lines and expressions. Good thing the applause sign told the studio audience that it was over

Miley sings again with three men on stools playing acoustic guitars. One man was pretty short, probably qualifies as a little person. His guitar was smaller and so was his stool. That was odd.

Replacement poetry teacher
Venessa is a weird character who is not understood by the class. A character-based sketch with a lot of poem reading. Not very funny, but not the worst sketch on the show. A group of three writers could have come up with a better sketch about a substitute poetry teacher than SNL's 30 writers. Maybe politics holds back the better sketch writers. I would rather not write for SNL if this was my one sketch that got on the show.

The last piece was pre-taped with Miley wanting to have sex with one of the new cast members but he's hesitant. Fellow cast members try to tell him he has "the perfect girl" in there but he's confused, hesitates, and loses out to his older brother. I'm not sure what this was.

The show was watchable but if i didn't feel I had to watch then I would not. Some things should not be called sketches. They were more like a co-worker walking past your office door walking and quacking like a duck. It might make you laugh but it's not really a sketch. It's just something to make you laugh (hopefully).
